Today is Clarinet Day. Squidward’s favorite instrument, is popular with kids joining the school band, partly because the case is easy to carry! Clarinets are part of the woodwind family of instruments, because you blow past a wooden reed. Listen to some early jazz clarinetists, like Sidney Bechet, Benny Goodman, or Woody Herman.

An Exciting Start to the School Day

How would you like to have breakfast, with a deer? Some students in Ohio were shocked, when a deer crashed through their school cafeteria’s window. Luckily, no one was hurt, including the deer. While students enjoyed breakfast in their classrooms, police escorted the deer safely off campus. School food is only for kids.

Houses that Can Withstand Hurricanes

Hurricanes are becoming stronger and more common, as the Earth gets warmer. One company is working to make new homes, that are hurricane-resistant. Deltec homes are cylindrical, with conical roofs, and are anchored to stilts that reach deep into the bedrock. It’s tough for the wind to get a grip on the surface.

Give It All Away

Today is Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day! Look way in the back for moldy leftovers, and compost them. Don’t forget to recycle any disposable containers, because it’s also America Recycles Day. Plus, it’s Philanthropy Day, which is giving money to good causes. Buy less, donate more, and give the landfills nothing!

Snack While You Write

My raisin bran is crunchy, and kind of chewy too. I’ll bake it in a bundt pan, and make a cake for you! That’s a little poem I made up, for I Love Writing Day. It’s also Raisin Bran Cereal Day, and Bundt Cake Day. Bundt pans can make ring-shaped cakes, or beautiful Jell-o.

Eat Some Green Stuff

Today is Pickle Day. Whether it’s a giant crunchy dill pickle or a tiny sweet gherkin, sliced on a sandwich, or fried on a stick, pickled cucumbers are delicious! Would you enjoy pickles dipped in squashed avocado? It’s also Spicy Guacamole Day, so this would be the day to try it!

Comet Is Just Visiting Our Solar System

Scientists have been studying the unusual comet 3I/ATLAS, since July. They estimate the comet formed 11 billion years ago, and comes from outside our Solar System. As it passes through our system, telescopes have discovered it contains more nickel, water, and carbon dioxide than expected. The interstellar traveler is fascinating!

The Greatest Grape Vine

In the early 16 hundred’s, a grape vine started growing in the mountains of Tibet. 416 years later, it’s been recognized as the oldest vine in the world. The vine is 26 feet tall, and more than 2 feet in diameter. Its grapes must have fed so many people over the centuries!
