Adding an Addax to the Family

There’s a new baby, at Illinois’s Brookfield Zoo. Visitors witnessed the birth of an addax, which is a critically endangered African antelope. The male calf was the first baby for mom Ivy, and the 5th for dad Ishnala. They are part of the Species Survival Plan, to keep the addax from going extinct.

Seagrass Performs Many Jobs

A new project by the Med Sea Foundation, aims to plant 1,000,000 seagrass seedlings, off the coast of Sardinia. Covering 19 square miles of the ocean floor, the plants will provide a habitat that also anchors sediment, regulates acidity, and traps more carbon-per-inch than rainforests. Other coastal areas are following suit, helping the environment.

Your Cat’s a Little Jumpy

Trisha Seifried and her cat, set a new jump-roping world record. She convinced Kit Kat to skip a rope 9 times, in one minute. They might have been able to do more, but Kit Kat insists on a treat after each hop, which slows them down. The clever kitty also enjoys giving people high-fives.

Walking Through a Field of Happiness

Scottish farmer Crawford Niven, didn’t think sunflowers could thrive in his northern climate. After he was happily surprised to find they would survive, he planted 13 acres of sunflowers! 250,000 of the 7-foot-tall flowers line a winding trail, that draws visitors from all over the world. Happy yellow sunflowers bring smiles to their faces.

Women’s World Cup Winners

The final game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup took place this morning. Spain defeated England, 1 to 0. Yesterday, Sweden won their match over Australia, for 3rd and 4th place. Soccer is the world’s most popular sport, and about 2,000,000 people were able to attend one of the matches in person.
