New Feather Star Species Discovered

Researchers have discovered a new sea creature, near Antarctica. The Antarctic strawberry feather star, has 20 arms, and is around 8 inches long. Some arms are bumpy, and some are feathery, with smaller tentacle-like strings ending in claws, to help them grip the ocean floor. They are related to starfish, sea urchins, and sand dollars.

Celebrating Lizards

Today is World Lizard Day. From the giant 6-foot-long Komodo dragon, to the teeny-tiny 1-inch-long nano-chameleon, these amazing reptiles live all over the world. There are more than 7000 different lizard species. Chameleons can change color, geckos can walk on ceilings, and basilisks can run on water. Which scaly critter is your favorite?

A Kid Created Creamsicles

Today is Creamsicle Day! Creamsicles are vanilla ice cream on a popsicle stick, covered with an orange flavored coating. 11 year-old Frank Epperson, made the original creamsicle in 1905, when he experimented with freezing orange juice around a vanilla ice cream popsicle. He originally called his inventions, “Epsicles”!

Hey 4th graders, have you visited a National Park this summer? The year you’re in 4th grade in the United States, you can get into any National Park for free! Students can print a free annual pass, good for everyone in the car, at Every-Kid-Outdoors.gov. Summer’s nearly over, so plan a visit.

 

Condor Chicks Are Thriving

The California condor, went extinct in the wild, back in 1987. Thanks to successful breeding programs, the largest flying bird in the Western Hemisphere has made a comeback, and new chicks are being born in the wild again. At Pinnacles National Park in California, 2 condor nests each hold a healthy, fuzzy chick.

Weird Barbie Is Here

If you saw the Barbie movie, you know all about Weird Barbie, the doll that was played with too much. Mattel decided to make a real Weird Barbie Doll, complete with writing on her face, colorful chopped hair, and a flexible body-type, with legs that can do the splits.
