Digging Out a City Takes Decades

Archaeologists in Egypt, have completed the excavation of a 1700-year-old Roman city. Built around the year 300, after pharaohs no longer ruled Egypt, the city included rock towers that were used to house pigeons. There were also workshops, homes, and Roman Baths. The baths were first discovered in the 19 80’s.

Life-Saving Ketchup

After a storm swept his boat into the open ocean, Elvis Francois couldn’t find his way back to port, and survived for 4 weeks, on a bowl of soup and a bottle of ketchup. The Heinz company, who makes ketchup, is looking for Elvis, to give him a new boat to avoid future disasters.

Don’t Untie Your Tongue With a Sword

Today is World Sword Swallower’s Day. There aren’t too many places to watch sword swallowing, and we certainly don’t want you to try it, but it sure sounds cool! Try saying, black bug’s blood,10 times instead, since it’s also International Tongue Twister Contest Day. The only danger, is tying your tongue in knots.

A Whole Bag of Sunflower Seeds

How would you like to grow a flower, as big as your head? A sunflower in Wales, is much bigger than that. The Fortey family broke their own world record, by growing a sunflower with a 14.2-pound head! The center of the massive flower measured more than 2 feet across, but it had small petals.

I Think I’m Lost

A dog named Bailey, was adopted by a family in Texas. When Bailey went missing after getting loose, they contacted the animal shelter. Luckily, someone showed up at the shelter, with news of the dog. It was Bailey herself! She had traveled 10 miles to the shelter, and rang the doorbell with her nose.

Straws Are Superfluous

Plastic bags, bottles, and straws are just a few of the plastics polluting the Earth. Take a step to help clean it up, by not using those things in the first place! Today is Skip The Straw Day. If you can’t handle strawless drinking, get a reusable metal or bamboo straw to use instead!

Time for Chips and Salsa

Crunch-crunch-crunch. Today is National Tortilla Chip Day! In Los Angeles in the 19 40’s, Rebecca Webb Carranza noticed all the misshapen tortillas that were rejected at the El Zarape Tortilla Factory. She cut them into triangles and fried them, then sold them for 10 cents a bag. Corn + oil + water + salt = delicious!
