Today is Memorial Day in the United States. Previously known as Decoration Day, it honors those who have died while serving in the military. The holiday also marks the beginning of summer, when pools and amusement parks open. Some lucky students have even finished the school year by now!

Needs More Hot Sauce

The new hottest pepper in the world, is the Dragon’s Breath chili, but it’s so spicy, it could actually kill a human to eat it. The hottest edible pepper is still the Carolina Reaper, and Gregory Foster set a new world record, by eating 3 reapers in under 9 seconds. He loves spicy food!

Driving Around in Circles

The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race takes place today, where Formula One race cars make 200 laps around a track. The fastest Indy 500 time was 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Helio Castroneves was averaging 190.6 miles-per-hour! The first Indy 500, in 19 11, was much slower. The winner averaged only 74 miles-per-hour.

The Tippy Top of the World

Today is Mount Everest Day, celebrating the tallest mountain in the world. Reaching an elevation of 20,031 feet above sea level, it’s part of the Himalayas, on the border between China and Nepal. 68 years ago, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary were the first people we know of, to climb to the top.

Welcome Baby Red Wolf

Red wolves are the most endangered canid species in the world, with only 15 to 20 remaining in the wild. Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo, is happy to announce the birth of a red wolf pup, to first-time mama, Brave, and papa Diego. It’s the zoo’s first red wolf pup since 2005.

Shark Volcano Erupts

Recent NASA satellite images, show plumes of discolored water, over the underwater Kavachi Volcano. It has been erupting, sending flows of acidic water through the ocean. The area also happens to be home, to hammerhead and silky sharks. That’s why one of the most active submarine volcanoes in the Pacific, is also called Shark-cayno.

Yawns Are Contagious

Try this experiment, while you’re around other people. Give a great big yawn. Did it make anyone else yawn? Scientists think yawning, which draws in fresh air and cools your brain, could be a way for groups of animals, to synchronize their behavior. It helps everyone, stay more alert. This is making me yawn.
