You’re such a nice person! I like that shirt you’re wearing. Today is Say Something Nice Day. Complimenting someone can really brighten their day. Try it and see! It’s also Pen Pal Day. Texting and e-mail are easy ways to write to people, but sending a hand-written letter in the mail is something special.

4th Graders Cover the Park Pass

The year you’re in 4th grade in the United States, you can get into any National Park for free! The Every Kid In A Park program, created by President Obama in 2015, is now called Every Kid Outdoors. 4th-graders can print a free annual pass, good for everyone in the car, at Every-Kid-Outdoors.gov.

That’s a Lot of Birthdays

There’s a tree in Chile, that could be the world’s oldest living tree. The Patagonian cypress tree’s trunk is 13 feet thick, so it’s hard to get an exact count of its growth rings, but the tree is likely more than 5000 years old. The next-oldest tree, is a 4853-year-old bristlecone pine, in Nevada.

Today is World Parrot Day. Parrots are very intelligent birds, who can develop large vocabularies. One African gray, knows more than 1000 words. Some parrots use plants, as their own pharmacy. There are over 350 different parrot species, many of them endangered. Some types of parrots, can live to be 100 years old.

Turn It Down

Do you wear headphones or earbuds when you’re watching videos? Maybe you listen to loud music. Today, on Save Your Hearing Day, try to give your ears a rest. Go outside and listen to the birds instead, or reed a book and let your imagination furnish the sounds. Your ears will thank you!

Today is Speak In Complete Sentences Day. Your parents will be so surprised when they ask how your day was, and you don’t just answer, “Fine.” It’s also Smile Day. When you give someone a smile, they’ll usually give you one in return. Collect a bunch of smiles, and spread some happiness around!

You Look Fang-tastic

1,369 pretend vampires, gathered in England at a 13th century abbey, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. They broke the world record, for largest gathering of people dressed as vampires. The event took place on World Dracula Day, and participants had to wear black clothes, capes, and artificial fangs.

Adding Joy to a Dreary Street

Tash Frootko has been brightening up her hometown, one house at a time. The artist has painted 25 row-houses in Gloucester England, in vibrant colors. The colorful streets are connected by huge wall murals, painted by artists Zoe Power, and Eloise Henderson-Figueroa. The neighborhood, now called Rainbow Square, feels full of new life.

He experimented by flying kites miles apart, then sending signals through the atmosphere. He also invented artificial teeth!
