Dogs on the beach, love to chase seagulls. One pooch in Wales was so determined to catch a gull, that he chased them into the water, and started swimming out to sea! The Rhyl Coastguard Rescue Team had to take a boat out to retrieve the dog, before he got stranded.

The city of Helsinki Finland, is rewarding people who protect the environment. Residents who use the CitiCAP app, can track their carbon emissions, when they travel around town. If they walk, bike, or take a bus, they use less carbon, and earn virtual money for things like bus tickets, pool passes, or cake.

Fiontann Hughes got a metal detector for his 10th birthday. He tried it out for the first time, on the banks of the River Blackwater, near his home in Northern Ireland. Maybe it was beginner’s luck, that helped him find a 300-year-old sword! It probably belonged to an English officer in the 1700’s.

Clever squirrels will do anything, to raid a bird feeder. Woodworker Michael Dutko, built the squirrels their own feeder, shaped like a bar. The Nutty Bar has 7 types of nuts on tap, like Pecan Porter, Pistachio Pale Ale, and Walnut Stout. The bathroom doors are labeled “Nuts” and “No Nuts.”

A couple in Ecuador, marked a major milestone with an official new world record. 110 year-old Julio Cesar Mora Tapio, and 104-year-old Maclovia Quinteros, have been married for over 79 1/2 years! They got married in 1941, and had 5 kids. Now, they have 9 great-great grandchildren. Their secret formula for a long marriage, is love + maturity+ mutual respect.

Scientists can learn a lot about the Earth’s past, by studying plant fossils. Researchers found a huge tree fossil buried in the plains of Peru, that reveals new details about the climate 10,000,000 years ago. It was more humid than they thought, and the altitude changed quickly, suggesting rapid uplift of the tectonic plates.

The purple woman’s silver spirit turned the chimney orange. Most of the words in that sentence don’t rhyme with anything, perfect for No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day! It’s also Tofu Day. Made from soybeans, it’s a great alternative to meat in any dish. Fried tofu in ginger-soy sauce is my favorite.

Today is World Letter Writing Day. E-mail is easier, but there’s nothing like getting an actual letter in the mailbox, complete with a cool stamp.
