Poetry In a Pan

Roses are red. Violets are blue. Some poems rhyme, but this one doesn’t. It’s Bad Poetry Day! Write a really bad poem for fun. It might be so bad, it’s good! It’s also Fajita Day. When you order a fajita you get your own sizzling pan of veggies, and tortillas to wrap them up!

Pyramid In the Grass

A hexagonal pyramid, has been discovered in the grasslands of Kazakhstan. The large pyramid covers around 5,300 square feet, and dates back 4000 years, to the Bronze Age. Archaeologists called it a sophisticated and complex structure, with several circles in the center. Images of horses and other animals cover the exterior walls.

No Stamp Needed

Pennel Ames, a fisherman from Nantucket, has picked up a few pen-pals around the world. Between the years of 2000 and 2006, Pennel wrote hundreds of letters, sealed them in glass bottles, and tossed them into the sea. So far, 80 people in Europe and the Caribbean, have found the messages-in-bottles, and written back.

Wake Up to Crickets

I hear crickets chirping! Male crickets chirp to attract females, by rubbing their wings together. Crickets can also tell you the temperature outside! Count how many times a cricket chirps in 14 seconds, then add 40, for an approximate temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. For Celsius, count the chirps in 25 seconds, divide by 3, then add 4.

Gather a Pile of Pencils

I’d like you to get out a number 2 pencil. Don’t worry, it’s not for a test. It’s just Number 2 Pencil Day! The number indicates how hard the graphite core is. Softer number 1 pencils are used by artists for drawing, and harder number 3 pencils, are used by architects and engineers.

Coyote Pup Joins a Game of Golf

A game of golf in Massachusetts, had to take a time-out for cuteness. A group of golfers was amused, to see a coyote pup run onto the green, and play with their golf balls. The young coyote grabbed a ball in its mouth, tossing and chasing it as the golfers watched with delight.

The World Cup Is Winding Down

Have you been watching the FIFA Women’s World Cup? The final games take place this weekend, with Australia playing Sweden for 3rd place, and Spain versus England in the final. Soccer is the world’s most popular sport, and more than 1,000,000,000 people watched the last Women’s World Cup game in 2019.

Summer Sounds of Cicadas

2 years ago, billions of periodical cicadas emerged from the ground after 17 years, filling the air with their song. But you might still be hearing cicadas this summer. Some stragglers can emerge a year or two late. There are also other species of cicadas, that emerge every year. The big bugs are all harmless.

Bananas Have Appeal

When you eat a banana, don’t throw away the peel. Did you know you can eat them? They can be dried and ground up into flour, and used for baking. Banana peels can be turned into fake bacon and pulled peel pork, or used in curries. If that sounds too hard, just compost them.
