A bookstore in Baltimore Maryland, inherited a mystery safe. They put out a call to safecrackers, offering half the contents to anyone who could open it. Rick Ammazzini from Manitoba Canada, spent all day cracking the safe, only to find some paper clips, empty wooden drawers, and an old paystub.

Layers Upon Layers of Life

Scientists have discovered an entire ecosystem, beneath undersea volcanic vents of the East Pacific Rise, near Central America. Using an underwater robot, the team found worms, snails, and bacteria, living underground. The world is hidden underneath the hydrothermal vents, and could hold lifeforms previously unknown to humans. Deep-sea exploration has so much to discover.

Keeping Everyone Healthy

Some kids have already started back to school, and most others will start in the next few weeks. Do you remember how to stay safe from COVID? Wash your hands often with soap, and use hand sanitizer. Wear a mask if you’re sick, to protect others. Most importantly, get vaccinated, including your booster shot.

New Feather Star Species Discovered

Researchers have discovered a new sea creature, near Antarctica. The Antarctic strawberry feather star, has 20 arms, and is around 8 inches long. Some arms are bumpy, and some are feathery, with smaller tentacle-like strings ending in claws, to help them grip the ocean floor. They are related to starfish, sea urchins, and sand dollars.

Celebrating Lizards

Today is World Lizard Day. From the giant 6-foot-long Komodo dragon, to the teeny-tiny 1-inch-long nano-chameleon, these amazing reptiles live all over the world. There are more than 7000 different lizard species. Chameleons can change color, geckos can walk on ceilings, and basilisks can run on water. Which scaly critter is your favorite?
