Today is Walt Disney Day. He started out as an illustrator, introducing the world to Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Later, Disneyland opened, and Disney movies like Snow White and Mary Poppins, became popular. Now, the Disney corporation makes Star Wars movies, has its own TV channel, and works with National Geographic. They’re everywhere!

Deer Also Have Trouble Untangling Lights

A deer in Oregon, got a head start on decorating for Christmas. The buck was spotted wandering around, with his antlers tangled in holiday lights. Wildlife officials were able to subdue him, to safely remove the lights. They recommend hanging lights high up, since deer rub their antlers against objects, to mark their territory.

Today is World Wildlife Conservation Day. Many species of Earth’s wild animals are endangered, and need special protection. They are hunted by poachers, and their habitats are shrinking and becoming polluted. Organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, use donations to help endangered species. They’ll let you symbolically adopt an animal, and learn all about it.

Big Turbo-Charged Cats

Today is International Cheetah Day. The fastest land animal, the big cat can accelerate to 60 miles-per-hour in 3 seconds, and reach 75 miles-per-hour, in short bursts! They live mainly in Africa. Cheetahs have small spots, and black lines down their faces. They sound more like a chirping bird, than like a lion!

Today is Sock Day. What socks will you wear? Whether they’re short, long, woolly, stretchy, striped, or mismatched, make sure they’re clean! It’s also Brown Shoes Day, so now your feet are dressed. Don’t let your feet have all the fun. It’s still Tie Month, so add some pizzazz to your neck too!

Today is Dice Day. Dice have been found in Egyptian tombs, that were 4000 years old! A standard die has 6 sides, but role-playing games have dice with 4, 12 or even 100 sides. It’s also Cookie Day. How many cookies do you get to eat? Roll a 120-sided die, and you might get 10 dozen!

Frogs Not Extinct After All

There’s great news for frogs, in Ecuador. Ecologists rediscovered 32 different species of harlequin frogs, that were thought to be extinct. Scientists had believed 87 frog species were missing, due to a fungal parasite called Bd. In reality, Indigenous people had been protecting many of the populations all along. Maybe they’re all still thriving.

World Cup Moves to Next Stage

Have you been watching the World Cup? The soccer tournament has been taking place in Qatar, with teams from 32 nations competing. Now that many teams have been eliminated in the group stage, the round of 16 begins. Countries from 6 continents are in the knockout stage. Who will you be rooting for?

Hawaiian Volcano Is Erupting

Last week, a volcano in Hawaii started acting up. Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on Earth, had not erupted in 38 years. Lava is now flowing down the northeast slope, which is unpopulated, so it’s not threatening any communities. You can watch the molten lava in action on YouTube’s Mauna Loa Eruption Cam.
