Respect and Appreciate Others

Today is the International Day for Tolerance, first declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1995. Tolerance is the ability to endure something that you don’t always like or agree with. As long as no one’s getting hurt, you can show tolerance with your little brother, your parents’ rules, or spinach!

Clarinet Serenade

Today is Clarinet Day. Squidward’s favorite instrument, is popular with kids joining the school band, partly because the case is easy to carry! Clarinets are part of the woodwind family of instruments, because you blow past a wooden reed. Listen to some early jazz clarinetists, like Sidney Bechet, Benny Goodman, or Woody Herman.

Fast Party Food

Today is Button Day! Zippers are quicker and Velcro is easy, but buttons can be beautiful or whimsical, and they’re definitely quieter. It’s also Fast Food Day, so get your meal at a drive-thru restaurant. Then, find your teddy bears, because it’s Have A Party With Your Bear Day! Don’t forget the honey.

Things Taste Better With Fire

One of the most important tools humans developed, is cooking with fire. Scientists discovered the earliest evidence, of cooking by prehistoric humans. The remains of a fish, found near the Dead Sea in Israel, show signs of being carefully heated, 780,000 years ago. Flint, used to spark fire, and other tools, were found nearby.

8 Billionth Baby Born

In 18-oh-4, after thousands of years, the world population reached 1,000,000,000 people. It took another 126 years, to reach 2,000,000,000. Less than 100 years later, as of November 15th, the world’s population hit 8,000,000,000, only 11 years after reaching the 7,000,000,000 mark. Luckily, experts say growth is slowing down, so Earth won’t get full.

A Ring of Writing

My raisin bran is crunchy, and kind of chewy too. I’ll bake it in a bundt pan, and make a cake for you! That’s a little poem I made up, for I Love Writing Day. It’s also Raisin Bran Cereal Day, and Bundt Cake Day. Bundt pans can make ring-shaped cakes, or beautiful jello.

What’s Growing Back There?

Today is Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day! Look way in the back for moldy leftovers, and compost them. Don’t forget to recycle any disposable containers, because it’s also America Recycles Day. Plus, it’s Philanthropy Day, which is giving money to good causes. Buy less, donate more, and give the landfills nothing!

Peeking Out to See the World

There’s a new little face to see, at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo in Nebraska. It’s a Matschie’s tree kangaroo joey. The baby was the size of a lima bean when it was born, more than 6 months ago. After all that time growing in its mother’s pouch, little joey finally poked its head out.

America’s Top Young Scientist

14-year-old Leanne Fan, won this year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Leanne developed a low-cost device, to detect and treat ear infections in children. Called Finsen Headphones, the headset uses blue light therapy, that could help prevent hearing loss in thousands of kids. The prize was $25,000, which she’ll use to patent her invention.
