Bees Want You to Wait Until June to Mow

A movement called No Mow May, is spreading. All you have to do, is let your grass grow in the springtime, to give bees a chance to dine on lawn flowers like violets, dandelions, and clover. Post a sign in your yard, so neighbors know you’re feeding the bees, not neglecting your yardwork.

Have you ever eaten a morel mushroom? It was probably one that someone you know, found in the wild. Every spring, people have hunted for the tasty fungi in forests, because they couldn’t be cultivated indoors. Biologists in Denmark have finally figured out how to grow them commercially, so stores could soon sell them.

Bunny-Approved Garden Section

A Walmart store in Colorado, found a secret shopper in its garden center. A rabbit snuck in, and was sampling the plants for sale! A customer filmed the happy bunny, who was munching on leaves in the vegetable section. She left the rabbit to snack in peace.

The Sun Is Acting Up

Our Sun’s magnetic field flips every 11 years, causing cycles of higher activity. The last flip happened in 20 19, so the Sun will experience increasing solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and sunspots, until 20 25. This week, 2 powerful X-class solar flares blasted out, which caused a shortwave radio blackout. Stronger flares can knock out power grids.

Celebrate Your Mexican Roots

Today is Cinco de Mayo, which is Spanish for the Fifth of May. The day commemorates a victory in 18 61: when 2000 Mexican soldiers fought off 6000 French soldiers in the Battle of Puebla, during the Franco-Mexican War. Mexican-Americans started the holiday as a celebration of their Mexican heritage including music, food, and dancing.

Hot Air Balancing Act

Rafael Zugno Bridi, is the new world record holder, for the highest slackline walk. The Brazilian daredevil walked barefoot across a slackline, that was stretched between 2 hot air balloons. The balloons were positioned over Praia Grande in Brazil, 6,236 feet in the air! Rafael walked 59 feet from one balloon to the other.
