That’s a Big Bunch of Bananas

A wall of yellow, greeted customers of a Jewel-Osco grocery store yesterday, in Chicago Illinois. Fresh Del Monte and Jewel-Osco, had teamed up to break a world record, for the largest fruit display. They created a massive fruit stand, filled with 70,000 pounds of bananas! The bananas were donated to food banks and customers.

Seeing Stripes

Locals in Santa Barbara California, have reported a zebra in the area. The sightings were unusual, since the animals are native to Africa. Apparently, it was probably just Maynard. Maynard is a domesticated zebra, known to be free-roaming, who’s been spotted occasionally over the last 9 years. He’s simply out exploring.

Undersea Mountain Ridges

After years of collecting sonar data, scientists have published a map, of the ocean floor around Antarctica. The seabed map shows canyons, mountains, and ridges, located deep underwater. Ships navigating Antarctica’s waters took depth measurements, in a process called bathymetry. By 20 30, there should be a bathymetric chart, of the entire ocean floor.

Micrometeoroid Causes Micro Damage

The James Webb Space Telescope, has a 21-foot mirror, made of segments. One of the segments was hit by a micrometeoroid. The massive telescope is nearly a million miles from Earth, so it’s impossible to conduct repairs, but NASA designed it to withstand minor impacts. The telescope can re-adjust its own mirrors.

Earl Gets the Extra Piece of Pie

Much Ado About Tamanduas

Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo, introduced a new baby tamandua. Tamanduas are a type of anteater, native to South America. Mom Carina, Dad Salvador and their new pup, are all doing well. The baby, who doesn’t have a name yet, travels on her mama’s back. Wild tamanduas can eat 9000 ants-per-day!

Rats to the Rescue

Earthquakes can topple buildings, and bury people in rubble. That’s where the Hero Rat project, can help. Rats are trained to carry tiny backpacks, containing microphones, video gear, and location trackers. They’ll work with search and rescue teams, to locate and communicate with survivors. The clever rats take only 2 weeks to train!
