Tonight you can see a total lunar eclipse, peaking at 6 a m Eastern Time. When the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the planet, called syzygy, the Earth’s shadow falls on the moon, making it appear red. Unlike a solar eclipse, you can view a blood moon without eye protection.

Seagrass Traps the Trash

The world’s oceans hold tremendous amounts of plastic pollution. Nature has its own cleanup tool, to help trap billions of plastic bits. Clumps of seagrass growing on the ocean floor, capture floating pieces of trash, keeping animals from eating them. It’s World Seagrass Day, so thank a Neptune seagrass ball for its good work.

Be Nice to the Horses and Pigs

Asian Elephant Calf Gets a Name

The Smithsonian Zoo in Washington D C, has named its new baby elephant. She’s an Asian elephant, and her name is Linh Mai, which means spirit blossom in Vietnamese. Asian elephants are endangered in the wild. The elephant calf was walking on her own within 5 hours of being born!

You Don’t Even Have to Stay Up Late

Watch a parade of planets tonight, by viewing 7 planets at once. They’ll be visible above the horizon, soon after sunset. You’re standing on the first planet, of course. In the sky, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn will be visible with the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars.
