Beatriz Flamini is a Spanish mountaineer, who wanted to learn about the effects of solitude. She spent 500 days alone, in an underground cave. Scientists monitored her remotely, as she spent her time reading books, knitting, drawing, writing, and exercising. She lost track of time, thinking only 170 days had passed, instead of 500.

Elephants Need their Space

Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world. Their skin is an inch thick, they can weigh over 12,000 pounds, and they eat 300-600 pounds of food a day, with around 220 pounds coming back out as poop. Keep the Ball In the Air

10-year-old Tang Jinfan, has quick feet. He just set a world record for juggling a soccer ball with alternating feet, the most times in 1 hour. He kept the ball going for 8,147 touches. He hopes to play professional soccer someday, and play for China’s national team in the World Cup.

62,000-Mile-High Plasmafall On the Sun

Astrophotographer Eduardo Schaberger Poupeau, captured a stunning image of the Sun last month. It shows a wall of plasma that shot up from the surface, 62,000 miles into space, which then cascaded back down like a waterfall. Scientists estimate the plasma was falling at speeds of more than 22,000 miles-per-hour!

Fast Food Pioneers

Today is McDonald’s Day. Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a barbeque restaurant in 1940, and added the Speedee Service System in 1948, selling hamburgers at a counter for 15 cents. Ray Kroc bought their business, and opened his first McDonald’s franchise, in 1955. Now, you can visit Mickey D’s in more than 120 countries!

There’s Still Some Juice In That Battery

A high school physics teacher in Kenya, is giving new life to old laptop batteries. Paul Waweru collects enough of them to make a battery pack, then replaces the gas-powered engines in motorized scooters and bicycles. The electric vehicles cut down on air pollution, save money, and keep old electronics from going to waste.
